MEM is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Tomoaki Ishihara “Aura and Ectoplasm”.

Ishihara is a key artist who came to the fore as part of the Kansai New Wave in the 1980’s, already making a name for himself during his studies at Kyoto City University of Arts and going on to present in the 1988 Venice Biennale the installation entitled “Promise”, including his self portrait burnt upon the surface of the canvas. In the 90’s he drew attention with his 3D abstract photographs, art work kits to be built by collectors, drawings made of braille and blurred portraits. Since the 2000’s he has come to develop the Scotoma series with vacuum glass sculptures and high powered microscope based photographic portraits. In this exhibition entitled “Aura and Ectoplasm” Ishihara presents an installation of leather sculptor based on the extensions of the body and its internal organs, accompanied by photographs of the artist wearing these sculptures.
