Kimiyo Mishima started her artistic career by creating oil paintings, before becoming known for her collage work of printed material in the 1960’s. Created when Japan was entering an age of rapid economic growth, her work was meant to denounce the inundation of information we are overflowed with, as well as consumer waste.

From 1971, and with the same purpose, the artist moved to tridimensional pieces, self-teaching herself to print on the surface of ceramic. Thus were born the Breakable Printed Materials. Whether by spreading a thin layer of clay over silk screens to transfer images, or by meticulously drawing by hand, Mishima creates highly realistic replicas of the original objects. She thus transforms the the past the artist always maintained the actual size of the original object in her works, she has more recently magnified them, with some of them now taking enormous proportions. This exhibition will present an overview of Mishima’s major artistic works.

Born in 1932 in Juso, in the Osaka prefecture, Kimiyo Mishima started as an artist by creating oil paintings after graduating from high school, in 1951. A member of the Independent Art Association from 1954 to 1969, she studied art in New York between 1986 and 1987, before pursuing her career in Japan. Mishima’s work was shown in many international exhibitions including Contemporary Japanese Art, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Geneva, Switzerland (1983), Contemporary Japanese Ceramic, Itinerant International Exhibition, Japan-Brazil, Art Museum of Sao Paulo (1998), and currently one taking place in ART FACTORY Jonanjima. She received several awards for her work, such as the Gold Medal in International Ceramic Exhibition, Faenza Ceramic Museum, Faenza, Italy, in 1974, and the Yamaguchi Prefecture Prize and the Citizen Prize, in 2001.

Mishima currently lives and works in Osaka and Gifu.

Bodily Gestures Through Photography
For Paris Photo 2015, MEM will be holding an exhibition showcasing artists whose works centre on the theme of the body: bodily gestures as well as the body’s relationship with time and space, and studies of bodily expressions in particular situations. Many of the featured artists specialise in self-portraitures which focus on their own bodily expressions. Their work can be considered as a kind of closed performance carried out in studios or production sites.

Through portraiture, Yasumasa Morimura has made references to historical paintings with the entire or partial use of his own body. His series dedicated to the study of hands focuses on hand expressions of figures depicted in Matthius Grünewald’s Crucifixion, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and Michelangelo’s paintings on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

By presenting photographs of herself jumping in mid-air as incidents of herself levitating, free from gravity, Natsumi Hayashi’s Today’s Levitation series sheds light on the capacities of photography which stands at the interface of scientific fact and fiction,

In FACIAL SIGNATURE, Tomoko Sawada presents 300 different versions of her own face. Inspired by her experience of living in New York, the work focuses on how an Asian woman’s face influences both Western and Asian societies.

Tomoaki Ishihara questions the fundamentals of photography and sculpture as an art form. From the early 2000s, the artist began creating a series of self-portraits, in which he created leather sculptures without a pedestal that suspended from his mouth as an extension of his body. His photographic work presents an experimental situation, one in which the artist becomes the artwork and at the same time the artwork is subordinate to the artist himself, functioning as a study of the relationship between the artwork and the artist and also the artwork and the viewer, from both ends of the relationship.

Through the work of the above mentioned artists, the exhibition will consider how, the body and bodily gestures, through experimental practices, are consummated as a work of photography.
