This exhibition is a continuation of Sakagami’s first series Positive Transference Part 1: Chinoiserie. “Positive transference” is a psychological term that in broad terms refers to the fundamental affections that humans have towards each other; compassion, sensitivity and thoughtfulness. Sakagami has kept this sense of humanity in the forefront of her mind when producing these works.
The works in this exhibition are on gampi paper, made from the fiber of a native Japanese plant with usage that dates back to the Nara period, with blue ink. Among them there are 8 larger works titled Lead Us Not into Temptation, a reference to the Lord’s Prayer. Sakagami’s works are accumulations of countless lines and points but she says that every time she puts pen to paper, that action of drawing is imbued with prayer. Through these prayers, her late pet bird Janáčeka has found her way into these works.
