Hiroshi Mizuta

Hiroshi Mizuta was born in 1982 in Osaka and currently lives in Kyoto. He graduated from the Kyoto City University of Arts, Graduate School of Arts in 2008. He often chooses urban scenery with repeating shapes like roads with traffic jams, rigidly ordered lines of apartment complexes. With his unique descriptive powers and sense of color he depicts familiar aggregations like a flock of pigeons in a park, laundry that hangs to dry on a veranda and city blocks. He focuses on the uncanniness and mysteriousness of the distortions that lay hidden in repetition and the enlarged agglomerations of the formative images of the new residential development where he was born and raised. In dialogue with these experiences, his painting expression captures the simplicity of how the act of painting is not special but merely a part of his lifestyle. The constant evolution of his painting style can be seen through his insights into the ordinariness of daily life.

His solo exhibitions include RETROPOLIS (Kyoto City University of Arts Gallery @KCUA, Kyoto, 2013), Interruption and Resumption (ARTCOURT Gallery, Osaka, 2015), Silent Drum (MEM, Tokyo, 2017) and more. He has participated in group exhibitions such as MOT Annual: Neo-Ornamentalism from Japanese Contemporary Art (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo, 2010), VOCA 2011 (The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo, 2011), 50 Years of Painting in Japan (The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama, 2013) and Pn – Powers of PLAY (The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of Arts (Chinretsukan), Tokyo, 2018).
