We are proud to present this exhibition to commemorate the publishing of Keizo Motoda’s photography collection TODOROKI.
In 1996, Motoda started a regular column called “ON THE STREET” in the Osaka Shimbun newspaper where he introduced people he met on the streets through photograph and text. The series was the origin of his creative style that we see today.
In this exhibition we will present 20 works from his exhibitions OPEN CITY, GOIKEN-MUYO and TSUPPARUNA including some which have not been exhibited before.

Keizo Motoda『轟・TODOROKI』

Without the dates clearly stated in the caption of each photograph, it would be difficult to ascertain in which decade Keizo Motoda shot the images in his photobook Todoroki (the 2010s).
In his street portraits, Motoda puts his fascination with sub- and fringe cultures in Japanese society into focus; from rockabillies, street performers, transvestite,  lowrider enthusiasts and traveling Buddhist monks. He turns his lens towards those who make the streets interesting.
“The sorrow, the joy of the people I pass, the flourishing and decline of the streets reach into me like the voice of living flesh.” — from Keizo Motoda’s afterword
