We are pleased to announce an exhibition focusing on monochrome photography from the ’80s to the ‘90s by Yasumasa Morimura.
This project will also take place throughout the same building, with NADiff Gallery in the basement, and a book fair opening in collaboration with NADiff a/p/a/r/t book shop on the floor above.
The exhibition consists of three parts. Part 1, Tabletop City, will introduce over two sessions all 49 pieces from Barco Negro na mesa, produced between 1984-85. The body of work also became the chance to develop an art history series, which could be called Morimura’s lifework, right up until the release of Portrait / Van Gogh (1985). Along with an early self-portrait, still-life photographs were carefully shot with handmade props and personal effects placed on a studio table. Some of these exhibit the same photographic series as the early video piece Cometman, made during the ‘90s in tribute to Marcel Duchamp.
Part 3, Tales from the Silver Screen, will show a showreel of early video work.
With “I” developed over many years, this initial phase of Morimura’s work will all be brought together.
