Retrospective Screening of Matsui’s work
Date&Hour | 12:00– February 27
We will start with her early video works where she recorded repetitions of her physical actions in fixed frames such as She Dissolves (2000) and She Reaches (2001). Then we will present her HEIDI series that she started since 2004.

We are pleased to present Matsui’s solo exhibition HEIDI 50 – on the day. This video installation is her newest addition to her HEIDI series.
Matsui is a graduate of the Kyoto City University of Arts. As an installation artist from the 1980’s, her work has been presented in international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale and Site Santa Fe. She has also been featured in international and domestic museums such as the National Museum of Art, Osaka; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. She co-authored Ichidomo De-to Wo Shinakatta / We Never Went Out on a Date with the art critic Keiji Nakamura.
From 2000, Matsui has focused on video art works. She features herself in her works. She has garnered acclaim for her illusory style and her scenes seem to dissolve place, history and memory.
In addition to the screening of HEIDI 50 we will also exhibit related sketches.
This exhibition will be held in partnership with the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum’s community initiative, the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions.
Matsui’s works will be presented in beautiful color using an Epson HTPS 3LCD projector.
