MEM presents 10 video works by Chie Matsui since 2000.
Chie Matsui was born in 1960 in Osaka. She is well known for her large-scale installation and site-specific works that were presented in many exhibitions in Japan, Canada, the States and Europe through the 1990s. In 2000, Matsui started video work to be projected inside of her installation. In “She reaches”, “She dissolves” and “Himalaya/kaidan”, Matsui shot herself repeating simple action in her own installation, her studio and spiral staircase in an old building. In a recent series Heidi, it becomes more narrative involving allegories and fairy tales. Heidi is a heroin from a famous story by Swiss author, Johanna Spyri. Her latest work Heidi-45 was shown in Yokohama Triennale 2005.
In reminiscence, 10 video pieces are shown including a preview of her new work, a sequel of HEIDI series.
